Sailing is an ART. We Treat it Like One!

In today’s world, shortcuts are an everyday way of life …but not at the Magellan Sailing Center, Inc.! Our curriculum is designed to develop fundamental concepts before proceeding to intermediate or advanced skills. It takes time and practice to become a competent sailor. You will apply your new skills before proceeding with the next certification level.

We do not issue multiple-levels of certifications for a single course. Our curriculum takes a bit longer and costs a bit more than the "quickie" weekend cram courses but you’ll develop the seamanship skills of a competent skipper!

Our class format has the lowest Student-to-Teacher ratio in the North Texas area.

Sailing is an art. We treat it like one.

ASA & US SAILING Certifications

We proudly offer certifications through two excellent certifying organizations, the ASA and US SAILING. This complementary dual certification ensures you unequaled quality instruction.

We are a comprehensive ASA (American Sailing Association) certification facility, offering courses from Basic Sailing to Bareboat certifications to Advanced & Offshore.

We certify under the US SAILING Keelboat Certifications System. This system has been developed by professional sailors in the top sailing organizations in the industry (US Naval Academy, OCSC of San Francisco Bay, J-World, the Steven Colgate Offshore Sailing School), as well as America’s Cup and Olympic sailors.

Sailing School Standards

The standards set by US SAILING in qualifying their instructors are unparalleled. Your instructor must meet both practical and legal qualifications. All instructors must have extensive sailing & teaching experience. Intermediate and Advanced instructors must hold a Masters Captains License (w/ sailing endorsements) issued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Learn Close to Home

Lake Lewisville
We are offering several sailing courses onboard our fleet of J-24 sailboats.   Every course is designed to develop fundamental sailing skills.

Our Beginner Sailing lessons are offered as a weekend introductory course in which you will learn some of the basics of sailing.  Successful completion of this course will result in a Competent Crew rating from The Magellan Sailing Center, Inc.

Our Master Skipper Course is a one-day, intensive training course for sailors with some experience.  It is designed to push the envelope just a little and increase boat handling skills.

Learn Basic Keelboat Sailing on the famous J-24 sailboat on Lake Lewisville with easy access to the North Dallas area. We are located on the south side of Lake Lewisville at Pier 121 Marina (just off of Hwy 121) and just a short drive from most North Dallas locations. This puts our fleet of fully equipped J-24 sailboats close enough so you can sail and relax after a hard day at the office! This stable, yet performance-oriented boat is nearby and ideal for learning and recreational sailing. Our boats are available for rent exclusively to qualified students.

Highport Marina, Lake Texoma
Ready for Intermediate Sailing lessons? Based out of famed Highport Marina on Lake Texoma, learn how to handle big boats aboard boats like the famous Beneteau sailboats. These are the same prestigious sailboats used by the Moorings (the largest charter company worldwide).   The boats have private berths, heads, a galley, and dining facilities.  Upon successfully completing this course, you are certified to rent 30-35ft sailboats on simple waters (local lakes or the Caribbean)!

Private Instruction: The Effective Alternative!

Our goal is Excellence & Competency!   We represent an alternative to cram courses.  Our specialized  private lesson format is more than a group lesson for a small group.   Our specially developed drills concentrate on YOU and develop sound sailing fundamentals and techniques.

The critical factor in any sailing program is tiller time.  Tiller time is the time YOU actually operate the boat, not the time you spend watch someone else sail. There is NO substitute for tiller time!

As long as the boat & weather cooperate, sailing really isn't a difficult sport.  However, when a squall line comes rushing across the water and the winds build to 50 mph, will you really know what to do?  Call to discuss and design a program to meet your needs.

US SAILING Challenge & Refresher Courses

You may already have sailing experience and don't need the full basic sailing curriculum.  We offer Challenge & Refresher courses.

The accomplished sailor, already familiar with the basics of sailing, who wants to pursue higher level Certifications, may challenge the basic standard. Our Fast-Track Certification program is available for an hourly rate (takes approximately 2 to 4 hours).  A friendly warning: Challenging the standard is demanding and rigorous.  However, we will not ask you to do anything we don't ask of our students.

If you have some sailing experience and simply want to review or sharpen your skills, customized Refresher Courses are also available.

We have quite a few several sailors who have taken a brief refresher course and then successfully challenge our standards.

The Final Authority on Sailing

When you demand the best, go to the final authority! US SAILING has been representing sailors for over one hundred years. It is the non-profit National Governing Body for the sport of sailing in the United States as established by the U.S. Congress under the Amateur Sports Act. All aspects of sailing, rule and race administration, and supporting the U.S. Olympic sailing team, are the province of US SAILING. It’s the first thing to look for in a sailing school!

A Brief Note About Our Teaching Philosophy

When I think back over my own education and reflect on those instructors I really respected, those who made a real difference in my life, I noticed that they had one single common trait:  They pushed me.  They didn't settle for the average result.  They were able to get more out of me than I was ever able to get out of myself.

This is our promise to you:  If you take one of our classes, you can expect to be pushed.  We do not settle for an average result.  We will get more out of you than you are able to get out of yourself!  You will know you have accomplished something!
